What is Florida Trend’s Legal Elite?

There are many different awards and distinctions that Florida attorneys can attain. When you are searching for a local attorney to represent you, have you ever browsed a law firm’s website and wondered what the gold medal titled Florida Trend’s Legal Elite means?

This prestigious designation recognizes a select number of attorneys who are nominated and chosen by their peers each year. In fact, only 1.2 percent of all Florida Bar members who currently practice in Florida are selected each year. To help inform you about Florida Trend’s Legal Elite, let us break down the nomination, voting, and selection process for you.

Nomination for Florida Trend’s Legal Elite

Each year, all Florida Bar members are invited to participate in Florida Trend’s Legal Elite by naming attorneys who they believe are the best in their practice area, those they hold in the highest regard, and those they would recommend to others. Participants are also asked to name three up-and-coming attorneys, as well as outstanding attorneys working in the government and non-profit sector.

Voting for Florida Trend’s Legal Elite

In terms of voting, attorneys are allocated a score based on the total number of votes they receive during the voting period. More weight is given to votes received from attorneys who do not work for the same law firm as the nominee. In terms of eligibility, only attorneys who are licensed and currently practicing in Florida are eligible to be nominated.

Selection for Florida Trend’s Legal Elite

Once the voting period has ended, a panel of previous Legal Elite winners, each representing different practice areas, review the Florida Bar membership status and histories of the attorneys who received the most votes. At this stage in the process, the Legal Elite recipients are selected and notified. Additionally, the Legal Elite Hall of Fame members are chosen. The Hall of Fame is comprised of a select group of attorneys who are consistently voted for and are ranked highly during the annual voting period.
